Our Partners

The News Media Alliance partners with other news media industry associations and trade organizations, including:

News Leaders Association

The American Society of News Editors and the Associated Press Media Editors joined forces to become the News Leaders Association. NLA empowers journalists at all levels with the training, support and networks they need to lead and transform diverse, sustainable newsrooms.

NLA advances the cause of quality professional journalism, and welcomes journalists, news leaders, academics and others to join us as members.

The News Leaders Association focuses on leadership development and journalism-related issues. Founded in 1922 as a nonprofit professional organization, NLA promotes fair, principled journalism, defends and protects First Amendment rights, and fights for freedom of information and open government. Leadership, innovation, diversity and inclusion in coverage and the journalism work force, youth journalism and the sharing of ideas are also key ASNE initiatives.

Members can be editors, producers or directors in charge of journalistic organizations or departments; deans or faculty at university journalism schools; leaders and faculty of media-related foundations and training organizations and other individuals at the board’s discretion. A committee of the board of directors reviews applications for membership. NLA’s members are individuals, and its board is elected by members. Many of NLA’s initiatives are carried out by its committees. It also operates projects coordinated by staff with advice from committees and the board.

Coalition for Better Ads

Advertising helps support valuable free content, robust journalism and social connections across the internet. Consumers, however, are increasingly frustrated with ads that disrupt their experience, interrupt content and slow browsing.

Leading international trade associations and companies involved in online media formed the Coalition for Better Ads to improve consumers’ experience with online advertising. The Coalition for Better Ads will leverage consumer insights and cross-industry expertise to develop and implement new global standards for online advertising that address consumer expectations.

WAN-IFRA

The World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers, or WAN-IFRA, is the global organisation of the world’s press, representing more than 18,000 publications, 15,000 online sites and over 3,000 companies in more than 120 countries.

With its wide array of conferences, training, seminars and research reports, WAN-IFRA is a trade association covering every aspect of newspaper and news publishing. WAN-IFRA oversees initiatives to ensure that the press’ essential role in society is understood and respected. The organization fights to protect copyright online, to maintain open coverage of newsworthy events, and to help newspaper companies go “green”. WAN-IFRA represents the newspaper industry in all international discussions: it has formal associate status to represent the newspaper industry at UNESCO, and consultative status at the United Nations and the Council of Europe. It also works closely with the 79 national newspaper associations within its membership. WAN-IFRA carries out its work from headquarters in Darmstadt, Germany, and in Paris, France, with subsidiaries in Singapore and India.

Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press

The Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press was founded by leading journalists and media lawyers in 1970 when the nation’s news media faced an unprecedented wave of government subpoenas forcing reporters to name confidential sources. Today it provides pro bono legal representation, amicus curiae support, and other legal resources to protect First Amendment freedoms and the newsgathering rights of journalists. Funded by corporate, foundation and individual contributions, the Reporters Committee serves the nation’s leading news organizations; thousands of reporters, editors, and media lawyers; and many more who use our online and mobile resources.

Purple Project for Democracy

The Purple Project for Democracy is a non-partisan coalition, campaign and movement of mindful patriotism seeking to raise awareness and educate around the benefits of democracy. It educates about the design and function of our democratic institutions, dispelling common misconceptions that feed public mistrust; dramatizes the real-life stories of Americans famous and obscure, whose experiences have shaped our history and our law; and creates means to stimulate civic engagement – from canvassing for political candidates, to testifying at the school board, to volunteering at the library, to serving on a jury, to running for Congress, to just plain voting.
